You could be using that same voice you encourage everybody else with to earn income from home. Let that sink in for a second.

Did you know you could get paid to read Bible stories from home?

If you enjoy inspirational stories, motivational books, or messages that help people get through a rough season, audiobook narration might be an opportunity you haven’t considered. Authors need people to bring those words to life. And yes, beginners can get started. Y’all, this is a real opportunity.

I’m speaking from experience. I started narrating audiobooks in 2020 with no audiobook experience, and six years later, I’m still receiving monthly royalties from books I recorded years ago. As a single mom, having work I already completed continue to bring in income? That means something.

Let me show you the free website I used, how the money works, and what you actually need to get started.

The FREE Site Where You Can Find Bible Story Narration Projects

The website is ACX, which stands for Audiobook Creation Exchange. It’s Audible’s platform for connecting authors and rights holders with narrators and producers. And it’s one of the best platforms for audiobook narration because it does many things on this one one platform, including:

  • Narration job listings
  • Contracts
  • Most payments
  • Author and narrator communications

Approved audiobooks are  distributed through Audible, Amazon, and Apple Books through ACX.

Creating an ACX account is free. You can use your existing Amazon sign-in, build a narrator profile, and browse books accepting auditions.

Here’s what I love: you aren’t limited to one type of book. If Bible stories caught your attention, you can explore that interest and look for other encouraging titles, too.

Depending on which projects are accepting auditions, you can search ACX for topics such as:

  • Bible stories: including retellings and books that explore familiar stories
  • Inspirational stories: about hope, resilience, and starting over
  • Motivational books: that encourage readers to pursue their goals
  • Personal growth books: about confidence, habits, and moving forward
  • Self-help books: that offer practical guidance for everyday life
  • Devotionals and spiritual books: with reflective or encouraging messages

There are many other genres offered on ACX. But for those interested in inspiration, we will focus on the good book and other motivational topics.

These are topics to search for, not a promise that every type will have an open project today. You can also explore memoirs, romance, poetry, and more. Look for a project that fits your voice and interests instead of trying to squeeze yourself into somebody else’s idea of what a narrator should sound like.

ACX currently supports residents of the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, and Ireland with the required local banking and tax details.

Why Read Bible Stories and Inspirational Books

Do you fit any of these roles?

  • The person people call when they need encouragement
  • Someone that volunteers at local churches
  • On a journey of spiritual growth that you would like to share
  • A member of a local or online book club

These are just some of the roles that bring warmth or show interest in doing what you love.

And you’ll be happy to know, different books call for different voices. A relatable, conversational voice reading books is always needed.

And there is something powerful about work that lets you share an encouraging message while building something for yourself. You can help bring an author’s story to listeners and develop a skill you can use from home.

How Much Can You Get Paid to Read Books?

Okay, let’s talk about the part you came for: the money.

ACX projects can use three payment arrangements:

  • Per finished hour, or PFH: You agree on a production rate with the rights holder. A three-hour finished audiobook at $200 PFH would pay $600. That is an example, not a guaranteed beginner rate.
  • Royalty Share: Instead of a production fee, you share the audiobook’s royalties with the rights holder. Your earnings depend on the book’s performance.
  • Royalty Share Plus: You receive an agreed production payment and share in royalties after the book is released.

Under Audible’s new royalty model, exclusive titles earn a 50% royalty rate. New marketplace offers sent after May 26, 2026 use the new model; older titles depend on enrollment.

Here’s the part people miss: a finished hour is an hour of completed audio, not an hour of your time. Recording, editing, and checking the audio take additional time, so keep the workload in mind when comparing projects.

My early books used Royalty Share, and my most recent audiobook used Royalty Share Plus. That’s how work I did years ago can still earn money today. The production takes effort upfront; the royalties can continue afterward.

The pay for narrators can vary significantly.

With that said, it’s impossible to say how much audiobook narrators get paid. Payment depends on the type of contract, how many books the narrator reads, and the length of each book.

You can read ACX’s explanation of the new royalty model for the current details.

Online Courses To Learn Audiobook Narration

Whether you want to narrate as a side gig, or full-time, you must understand this is a real job within the publishing industry. As with any career, you will need to learn the process, especially if this is your first time.  Audiobook narrators are required to know:

  • How to edit audiobook recorrdings
  • The proper narration equipment
  • How to audition and land narration jobs
  • How to meet Audible’s strict audio requirements
  • How to spot and avoid scammers (yes, they exist everywhere)

As a beginner narrator, you can do this. But if you try to figure it out alone, it will be a much longer and challenging process.

The last thing you need is a book reviewer giving you a bad rating. Bad book reviews can prevent you from getting future jobs. We want honest reviews that are positive so others want to buy our audiobooks.

The Audiobook Blueprint online course will teach all of this and more.

You want the best chance of landing the jobs, getting paid more money, and how to get positive reviews on your books. Not waste time.

Is Audiobook Narration Possible For People With Busy Schedules?

Yes! One of the best things about audiobook narration is it allows you the freedom to work from home when you want.

You can make your own schedule. It can be your side hustle, or you can make it your full-time job.

What Equipment Do You Need for Audiobook Narration?

You do not need to build an expensive studio before you understand the opportunity. But you do need a setup that can produce clean audio.

The basics include a suitable microphone, a reliable computer, headphones, recording and editing software, and a quiet space. Your recording environment matters right along with your microphone.

I use a Shure MV7+, and I’ve put my narration equipment recommendations together so you can see the options in one place.

Browse my audiobook narration equipment list on Amazon.

When I started, I didn’t have money sitting around for equipment. A friend who made music gifted me a microphone. I found a way to work with what was available.

Sometimes the next move is being resourceful. You don’t have to have everything figured out today to learn what your first step should be.

Can You Still Narrate Audiobooks With AI Around?

I know somebody is already thinking, “But isn’t AI doing all of this now?”

ACX’s current audio requirements say submitted audiobooks must have human narration unless otherwise authorized. Unauthorized AI and text-to-speech recordings are prohibited. That qualification matters because authorized AI programs also exist.

So yes, human audiobook narration is still an option. Focus on what you can bring to a story: warmth, emotion, timing, and a performance people want to keep listening to.

Tips for Book Lovers that Want to Narrate Audiobooks

There are many misconceptions about audiobook narration, so let me run some things down for you.

  • Audiobook narration is possible for any age. You get jobs as a young adult, senior, and every age in between. The whole family can get paid to read!
  • No one cares what you look like. ACX needs narrators with many types of accents, races, and backgrounds.
  • Audiobook narration is available all over the world. ACX is in the U.S., U.K., Canada, and Ireland. But there are more platforms that offer narrator jobs.

Expert tip: When looking for books to narrate, look for high-quality reviews on the actual book. Audiobooks often have a physical version already published. Look at the buyer or editorial reviews to get an idea if readers like the storyline, if they mention grammar errors, or provide other helpful feedback. You want narrate books that can earn you good reviews.

How to Start Without Getting Lost in the Process

Finding ACX is the easy part. Knowing which books fit your voice, how to create a strong audition, and how to deliver finished audio is where the learning comes in.

When I started, figuring out the sound requirements took me weeks. ACX checks things like audio levels and background noise, and files that don’t meet its standards can be returned for corrections.

That’s why I created my Audiobook Blueprint course. I teach the process of choosing projects, auditioning, understanding and negotiating contracts, recording, editing, and meeting ACX’s sound requirements. It also includes access to my narrator community.

If you’re still deciding whether narration fits you, start with my free Paid to Narrate class. It’s a way to understand the opportunity before choosing your next step.
