Be prepared with simple homeschool organization ideas!
So, you’ve been recruited to teach your child at home. I know firsthand how stressful it can be.
I homeschooled my daughter a year before the pandemic hit, then after enrolling her in school the following year, I was lucky enough to have the school open most days, but I still had to homeschool her on several occasions. Oftentimes, with less than a day’s notice. If there was a Covid scare at school, or if it was the week of a holiday, I had to be ready to homeschool my kid. And as a single mom, it was a nightmare.
I say all that to say that even if your child is enrolled in physical school this year, the economy is very shaky. Your child may have to suddenly be taught at home. And I want you to be prepared. So I’ve put together this list of homeschool organization hacks to help parents minimize the chaos and be ready to teach their kids in a well-prepared setting.
These homeschool organization tips will help you make the most of small spaces, larger spaces, and even those without a dedicated homeschool room. Let’s jump in!

DESKS AND TABLES
If you have space, you should consider getting a desk or table for your child to work on. Having a dedicated space can help keep the work area much more organized.
My favorite places to find homeschool desks and office desks are Amazon, Overstock, and Pottery Barn Kids.
If you’re on a budget, you can always use a table that is already in your home. Or keep it simple, with a desk like the K&B Computer X Desk.
The desk has space for a computer and has drawers for storage. It comes in pink or white. It’s 31″ tall. So it’s not too high. This is a great option for kids. It can even double as a home office workspace.
For a multifunctional option, check out the UTEX Kids Study Desk with Storage.
CHAIR
Since the kids will be sitting for a while, a comfortable chair is a must-have. And let’s be real, if the chair looks better, a child is more likely to stay put.
Some great places to find kids’ desk chairs include: Overstock, Walmart, and Amazon (of course!)
Here are some fun and comfy options:
This cute and comfy unicorn computer chair has a softcover, and comes in a few color choices:
Another great option is this versatile chair. It can be used for study, then for gaming:
STORAGE
Homeschooled kids will need a place to keep their papers, books, and other supplies organized. Depending on the size of your space, you may want to use a file cabinet or cart to store those things.
Some of the best places to find storage for school supplies are: Walmart, The Container Store, and Amazon (again!)
A rolling cart is very useful in teaching at home. It can hold supplies and can move around with ease. It’s great for holding art supplies, flashcards, printables, or other small supplies.
This Rainbow 9-Drawer Storage Unit has a lot of storage space. The 9 drawers can help organize many different papers and school supplies. And I love that the Container Store has the option to add compartments to the drawers.
Another affordable option is this Halifax 5 Storage Drawer. It has removable wheels to have the option for mobility. This is especially good if you want to use it in different rooms.
CHALKBOARD/WHITEBOARD
When homeschooling my kid, a chalkboard/easel has come in handy for giving a visual display during lessons.
When shopping for a chalkboard, my go-to is Amazon. They have so many affordable options that can be shipped fast.
I chose to get the Hape Kids Art Easel. It’s versatile and saves space. It has a whiteboard and chalkboard. It folds up for easy storage. The dry erase whiteboard is magnetic. The storage tray has cups and a paper roll holder. And since I have a tall child, the adjustable-height comes in handy.
DESK ORGANIZER
Keeping the kids’ workspace organized is so important. The last thing you want is to waste time searching for pencils, or scissors when you need them. A great desk organizer will save you many headaches.
I have found some cool desk organizers at The Container Store and Amazon.
A popular organizer on Amazon is this Rotating Desk Organizer. It can even be used in small spaces. It has lively colors, is compact, and can hold a variety of school supplies:
I also like this Poppin Letter Tray Storage Kit at the Container Store. This kit comes with a pencil holder and trays for papers and accessories. It’s buildable, so you have the option to get the full kit, or just some parts of it.
These simple homeschool organization add-ons can make a world of a difference in making this journey easier. Hopefully, these tips will help get your homeschooling space get organized to make the experience easier.
